Achieving the best in the west: Cultural Respect Encompassing Simulation Training (CREST)

This project developed a pool of thirty trained and culturally diverse simulated patients (SPs) who assisted entry-to-practice learners and graduate staff with interprofessional learning via four piloted cultural sensitivity training modules and eight case scenarios using immersive simulation scenarios. The SPs came from non-English speaking backgrounds and were from six cultural groups (Muslim, Italian and Greek, Vietnamese, Iraqi, Sudanese and Chinese). Religious backgrounds and sexual orientations were also factors that were examined and taken into consideration during this process. Clinical Placement Solution Series: Building Capacity Series

In 2011, the Victorian Clinical Placements Summit explored broad themes, challenges and opportunities in the delivery of clinical placements. Participants contributed to the development of key priorities that the then Victorian Clinical Placements Council subsequently articulated in Victoria’s strategic plan for clinical placements, 2012-15: Well placed. Well prepared. The Clinical Placement Solution Series aimed to bring strategy into practice by exploring real-world initiatives aligned with these themes and aimed to share knowledge and experience throughout the Victorian clinical education community.

Interprofessional Case Simulations

Eastern Health SLE initiative for outer metropolitan and rural clinical sites

This project purchased and equipped a mobile simulation van alongside developing an education and simulation training centres across the eastern metropolitan region. The focus of the simulation training is on delivering care in community health environments.

Gippsland Regional Advancing Clinical Education (GRACE) Program

This project established a CPN-wide supervision training framework that included novice supervision training that articulated into VET qualifications; along with train-the-trainer components. The project also developed an online database of supervision resources and sought to develop training opportunities in community health, mental health, Aboriginal health and aged care.

Supervisor Training and Education Program (STEP)

This project delivered an interprofessional clinical supervision training and education program and a 12 month evaluation to determine its longer-term impact upon clinical placement capacity and quality. A train-the-trainer/mentoring program was established, existing eLearning resources were enhanced and formal research was undertaken to determine the benefits of the program for clinical supervisors and its applicability across Victoria.

Expanded settings – good news stories

National Clinical Supervision Competency Resource in Victoria

The National Clinical Supervision Competency Resource provides a national benchmark that describes the core competencies of clinical supervision, across all health disciplines, settings and sectors.

The Clinical Supervision Skills Review Tool assists clinical supervisors to review their skills in clinical supervision. The tool is easy to use and assists supervisors with their strengths in clinical supervision, and any areas that may need further development.

The Resource Guide provides a helpful guide to implementing the National Clinical Supervision Competency Resource and the Clinical Supervision Skills Review Tool in Victoria.

These resources can be used by supervisors, managers, teams, organisations and education providers.

Clinical supervision: spotlight on conversations

The aim of this project is to develop an educational toolkit including DVD simulations and activity-based workshops for clinical supervisors, focusing on enhancing communication skills in a variety of circumstances. The purpose of the workshops is to refresh knowledge and translate that knowledge into clinical education practice.  It includes strategies to plan and carry out conversations that may be seen as difficult or challenging, as well as opportunities to practice these conversations in a safe, supportive environment.

Further resources were developed in 2016 to support educators to facilitate the “fishbowl/real play” activity. This activity is described in detail in the Workshop Toolkit Booklet and is additionally supported by a package of short films. These seven films explain and demonstrate the activity in detail and include participant perspectives and a conversation about facilitating the workshop and this activity. Films in the package are identified in the list below with the first word “Facilitator”. All material in these films was captured live and unscripted.  

Sustainability blueprint, tools and templates

The Sustainability blueprint has been prepared to assist project leads and their organisations to develop sustainability plans to optimise the use of assets for clinical placement programs. The blueprint provides an overarching framework for organisations to use in the design of their sustainability plans, taking a step-by-step approach that begins with an assessment of the project’s external and internal environments, provides guidance on cost optimisation and revenue enhancement, and concludes with an outline of some specific actions (strategies) for achieving financial sustainability. The blueprint contains information on the sustainability challenge and methods and tools to assist lead organisations to respond to the uncertainty of their funded projects. Accompanying the blueprint is a worked case study and a range of templates and tools designed to provide hands-on practical assistance to project leads and organisations as they develop their sustainability plans.
